into the great wide open is a music and art festival on the small island of vlieland. as part of the art @ night route i created an installation at a small inlet of a pond. 500 led lights were installed between the reeds depicting a colony of fireflies. these pulsated softly in the resting stage. as people approached the work in the darkness they activated a disturbance causing the swarm to fly up and move around in a circular motion. eventually the small creatures would calm down and regain their original pulse.

heidi romano: a piece of luck
a piece of luck & other stories
old books, discarded, dismembered, or worthless and forgotten. photographing these books over months, in ever changing light, the imprint of time revealed their contents. I was interested in showcasing the craftsmanship of yesteryear, of traditionally printed books before the digital age. their texture and quality suggest a lost art. these images are delicately composed landscapes where perspective and perception are manipulated. nuances of horizon lines ask, ‘what do you see?’

what's in our food? what's the difference between a bird's-eye view of a remote vegetable crop and a microscopic swath from a pineapple leaf? how distinct is a pile of table salt from miles and miles of icebergs?
